AEROSMITH “SELF TITLED ” (U.S.COLUMBIA)1973 W DREAM ON…CVR VG+ MUCH COVER AND AGE WEAR. DISC IS VG++ SOME SCUFFS LITE SCRATCHES
You can almost hear the beer bottles breaking and the crowd hooting as Aerosmith chugs along through it’s bar-band drenched debut, but there’s already real magic at play here that finds the bean town boys assimilating and in many ways surpassing their British forefathers like the Stones and Yardbirds. Rather than getting mired in the same ol’ song and dance, tunes like “Somebody,” “Make It,” and the honkin’ “Mama Kin” plant their feet in the blues but keep their eyes on the skies, soaring through the ‘smith’s inventive inversions of riff and their primal swing ‘n’ swagger. Compared to the 24-karat platters to follow, this album does feel basic and tentative, Tyler a low growler and the guitars displaying more bark than bite, the whole album spinning under a cloudy production, but there’s also an irresistible charm that should keep you coming back. Of course, Aerosmith’s belated hit and most enduring track, “Dream On,” presents a whole other side of the band: a moody Zeppelin-ish ballad that’s all dry-ice and candelabras, and a classic anthem of aspiration destined to be blasted out of many a Camero deck following another crappy shift at your teenage job of choice, providing evidence that Aerosmith would connect with the dazed and confused masses and outgrow the pubs in due time
