BABY “SAME” (U.S.MERCURY) 1974 IN SHRINK M-/M-
This is the initially self-released debut of Texas boogie merchants Baby, although they were soon picked up by Mercury for their first album. There’s a nice variety of music here, hard rockers, boogie, AOR, a couple of inoffensive ballads, and it’s all done well. Starchild even has a hint of Stonesy swagger. The standout heavy cuts are Long Legged Woman, Don’t Let Nobody, Life’s What You Make It, Starchild and the harmonica-fronted Hard Road. Life’s What You Make It is my favourite, with it’s funky wah wah riff and lyrics we can all relate to. For a self-made record, this is of a very high standard and the band sound tight and well-rehearsed. A light-hearted and groovy record that’s perfect for listening to on the road.
