BOB DYLAN “BLOOD ON THE TRACKS” (COLUMBIA) 1974

Dylan has never sounded this concise or direct, and his ability to switch from spitting fury (“Idiot Wind”) to broken penitence (“If You See Her, Say Hello”) is as affecting as the melodies. After all, you don’t normally get this kind of nuance on a “breakup” album, regardless of whether blame’s being given or accepted.
In doing both, though, Zimmerman has created the all-important appearance of authenticity, ensuring his place in the hearts of romanticists everywhere. But whether or not his crumbling marriage served as Blood on the Tracks’ inspiration is irrelevant; the fact that he presents these mixed emotions with an air of experience is what matters.
