FLEETWOOD MAC “MIRAGE” (U.S. WB) IN SHRINK VG++ LITE RW.. DISC IS M- HYPE STICKER CVR W “HOLD ME”

By 1982 Fleetwood Mac had in it’s way sort of split up, solo careers had begun and the idea of meeting again to make an album was seen among them as kind of unintuitive. Or at least it did until the realization that only really Stevie Nicks was having that kind of success in her solo career, as Buckingham was clearly not. Nick’s Belladonna album was a smash nearly on the same level as the groups own works least ways as far as Tusk goes. But they did end up agreeing to join together again for what might be considered their last real album for that second big smash incarnation’s classic period. It’s been a real wild ride!…..alright maybe not wild but it’s been a very nice ride through some amazing songs and basically the best stuff soft rock had to offer from this period outside of New Wave anyway. There was a sort of strength in folksy soft rock at the time I guess, bands like Heart and guys like Tom Petty, but the Mac was definitely at the forefront of this thrust too. Against all this it’s easy to expect a lot from Mirage! Of course it’s also easy to expect nothing at all. It has gotten sort of shoohanded by the critics, isn’t usually talked about much next to the past three, and the standards of 70’s mainstream peoples in the 80’s tends to lean toward awful pointless trend jumping into drum machines and what have you. So Mirage has lots of hype of all kinds around it. So what is it?? It’s exactly as you might expect, a middle path through both such expectations. It’s nowhere near a masterwork, not really great either. But it’s far from a disaster or sell-out, and is pretty darn good actually! It’s exactly why I keep the 3.5 grade sitting around for, albums like this. The good ones, they offer you nice things, but won’t blow you away any. Mostly the songs on here aren’t exactly memorable, but are largely pleasant little goobers. And the near complete lack of pointless 80’sisms is really a shocker, in 82′ many other 70’s mainstays were well on their way to raping synthesizers (Rod Stewart for instance) but I think only once is it clear this 1982! Otherwise this could easily have been alongside their other three in terms of time period. And it does have some really good songs on it that make it NOT skippable. Stevie Nicks of course lays down the best songs with Straight Back and the amazing Gypsy. But McVie’s Hold Me is also a real stellar song. This is a good little album! Don’t pass it by Mac fans!
