Description

GENESIS “AND THEN THERE WERE THREE” (U.S. ATLANTIC, SD-19173) 1978 CVR VG+ Jacket with moderate corner/surface/edge wear. Original Atlantic inner sleeve included. Vinyl VG+ with PAPER scuffs and LITE scratches. In 1978, 3 years after vocalist Peter Gabriel left Genesis, guitarist Steve Hackett followed suit, leaving the band as a 3-piece. Hence…and then there were three…, the title of the band’s 9th studio album. Wittiness abounds in dem’dere hills, folks.

In general terms, losing Gabriel and Hackett notated a huge change in focus for the band, as they began broadening (read – ‘skewing’) their horizons from their experimental roots and toward the pop charts. With this album they found themselves smack-a-dab on the US singles chart, in the top 40, no less, with “Follow You, Follow Me”. That said, however, the rest of the album wasn’t as commercially-geared, and tracks such as “Down and Out” (i’m a sucker for a 5/4 time signature), “Undertow”, “Deep in the Motherlode”, and “Many Too Many” were more or less on track with some of the band’s earlier work. And “Burning Rope” was simply excellent.

All told, of course, the Collins-era doesn’t appeal to me near as much as the Gabriel-era, but this is still a solid addition to the vintage Genesis fan’s collection, and probably the point in time to start for the Genesis singles fan. Better than the previous album in both respects, really.
