Was there ever a more brilliant guitar band than this? Zepp could honestly release a textbook on how to write riffs and solos, using their first four albums as the lessons. Just listen to the beautiful licks of Jimmy Page’s perfect crafts, “Dazed And Confused”, “Black Mountain Side”, “Communication Breakdown”, I could go on, but I may as well list the whole album. Here we have the beginning of the most successful and one of the most beloved heavy rock bands ever, and time has served this album well. If fuzzy hard blues is your thing, you can’t go far wrong with the rip roaring music on this album. And it’s not just the guitar virtuosity of Jimmy Page that lends the album it’s brilliance; can we forget the belting bellows of Robert Plant? The flawless bassline wizardry of John Paul Jones? The perfect percussion of John Bonham (RIP)? Just like Black Sabbath, this is a classic band where each of the separate members could be a band on their own, and as a result this album (and many to come after) overflows with talent. Simply flawless.
