In 1977, Peter Frampton was in a surprising situation. His live album Frampton Comes Alive! had become a huge success, and the whole package, including words from some rock journalist on the back cover, looked very calculated. However, the music and Mr. Frampton’s performance doesn’t feel so calculated; instead, it feels like the artist only wanted to carry on – he was a musician more than a pop star. This is a slightly contradictory setting, and unfortunately, people seem to emphasize the ‘commercial’ dimension, which doesn’t exist much in the music that I hear on the album tracks. In fact, Side A of I’m in You is excellent. I have liked the title track from the start, and “(Putting My) Heart on the Line” is even better. “St. Thomas (Don’t You Know How I Feel)” is not much worse, and “Won’t You Be My Friend” sounds great all the way through – you don’t even notice the eight minute duration: this is not progressive rock.
