Original 1967 first pressing …a sought collectible, first solo album by Scott walker issued just months after leaving the sensational Walker Brothers =>>>>
From teen idol to intellectual….
Scott Walker emerged as a gifted singer-songwriter from the sixties era famous for his distinctive baritone. Although his beginnings were with the Walker Brothers (famous for their “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” and “Make It Easy On Yourself”), Scott soon distanced himself from the band and started working on his own projects. This classic album, also known as “Aloner” from 1967 marks the beginning of his first creative impulse. No one would expect the kind of lonely stranger Mr. Walker would soon become. The audiences in UK and the United States witnessed a rapid transformation: in a matter of a few years Scott went from teen pop idol to beatnik to existentialist with a passion for jazz and European cinema. Not more than six months after he had left the Walker Brothers, Scott already released this first self titled debut album.
Inspirations:
The album was said to have been heavily inspired by Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel whose
several songs also appear on the album but sung in English. Scott also included several covers of pop classics, and being a lover of cinema, he couldn’t exclude movie theme songs to appear on his debut. Finally, there are several songs that Scott personally wrote, that are a refreshment to the album. Brel’s influences and a turn to Euro rock…
The record starts off with Brel’s “Mathilde” which is poetically translated and is a perfect fit for Walker’s vocal interpretation. The marching band with the mad backing sounds romantically eccentric, which is Scott’s new identity in the realm of his newly found genre -euro rock. “Montague Terrace in Blue”, the second song on the number is already a novelty. Scott’s baritone matches perfectly with the slow paced arrangement, and the lyrics are atmospheric and incredibly elegiac. The lyrics, alongside the melancholic melody are a reminder of early Bowie who was obviously heavily inspired by Scott Walker. “Angelica” , “When Joanna Loved Me” and
“The Lady Came From Baltimore” are beautifully interpreted by Walker. The final song on side one is “Death”, another song by Brel. It seems that Walker was very much inspired by this Belgian musician because by the time you reach this track, it is already difficult to distinguish whether the melody and lyrics are written by Walker or by Brel.
Poetic expression:
“The Big Hurt” a wonderful movie theme, as well as “Through A Long And Sleepless Night” and “You’re Gonna Hear From Me” both of which are sang seamlessly. One of the greatest songs on the album is “Such a Small Love”, a slow paced but epic love song. “Always Coming Back To You” is another poetic expression with Scott’s infinite melancholic melodies. Finally “Amsterdam”, a track about sailors following the melody of traditional song “Greensleeves” climaxes in an orchestral storm and a raging poetic recital by Walker. The song was originally Brel’s but matched Walker’s style entirely.
Descendants:
“Amsterdam” was later covered by none other but David Bowie, who obviously borrowed a great deal from the two musicians when creating his unique musical genre in the early seventies. Bowie later admitted that Walker was his hero, which made sense. Scott Walker was even more popular than the Beatles for some time in the early sixties.
