Berry’s mature country-flavored songwriting is balanced against George S. Clinton’s enthusiastic rock and penchant for ballads.  Judy Elliott lends smoky lead vocals on Berry’s “All But Gone”, and the beautiful closing track “Don’t Hide Tonight”, which is highlighted by Clinton’s fragile piano work.
Timber certainly seemed to have a bright future, but Kapp was in the midst of being consolidated into MCA, and did little to nothing to promote the band.   Part of What You Hear is vibrant and adventurous, pushing the boundaries of genre and song structure.  Even in the internet age, a few gems are still hidden.  This promising debut is one of them.
