Description

WATCHPOCKET “SAME” Watchpocket EX GANTS
Self Titled
Time Records, US, 1972, 9 Tracks, Original Pressing

Criminally underrated album by this band led by Sid Gerring from the Gants. This is great blue-eyed soul with some harder rocking moments. Perhaps The Black Crowes heard these guys? Steve Cropper’s great guitar playing is also all over this, and he contributes some songwriting goodies as well. Actually, all of the musicians on this are top-notch players. Co-produced by Ron Capone, Cropper, and Williams, 1973’s “Watchpocket” served to showcase Herring’s impressive soulful growling voice (if there was ever a young white guy who sounded like a 70 year old blues singer it was Herring), as well as the considerable talents of the TMI studio players. Largely penned by Herring with support from former Gants drummer Don Taylor-Wood the collection literally dripped with blue-eyed soul. Originals like ‘People All Around Me’, ‘Four Walls’ (featuring one of Steve Cropper’s most impressive performances) and ‘Love Shine were all stunning performances. Imagine The Gants had they been allowed to record more original material and you’d know what to expect here. With the exception of the bland MOR ballad ‘Who’ll Take Care of Me’, there literally was not a bad song on the album.
