If there was ever a Pink Floyd album that was criminally under-rated, then ‘Atom Heart Mother’ is certainly THE one. Dismissed by the band (Roger in particular), most critics and certainly by the majority of their ‘fans’ – these dismissals have no effect on myself. Being a long time fan of the band, and like everyone else revere DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, & The Wall far superior and enjoyable, but the feeling I get when I listen to ‘Atom Heart Mother’ is…different. Maybe because of all the dismissals and maybe because it doesn’t sound like the others that followed, including ‘Meddle’. Or maybe, it is because it is the foundation of everything that would come later. Released after the Studio/Live effort ‘Ummagumma’ and before ‘Obscured By Clouds’, AHM sounds like the band was truly spreading their musical wings with the classically influenced title opus that opens the album or on the epic closing track ‘Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast’. The song ‘If’ is an acoustic based ballad, beautifully sung by Roger Waters and twisted dysfunctionally by Gilmour’s striking Fender manipulations. The only really ‘weak’ songs would be Richard Wrights’ ‘Summer ’68’ or Gilmour’s ‘Fat Old Sun’, and even both of those songs are gifted early compositions. No, ‘Atom Heart Mother’ is NOT a bad Pink Floyd album. It is not weaker than their more popular albums, it is just under vastly appreciated by the masses.
